Your Rhythm
Katia Rose
(Sherbrooke Station, #1)
Publication date: May 24th 2018
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance

You know what they say: save a snare, bang a drummer.

Kay Fischer is well aware of what they say, and she intends to ignore it completely.

After her first step into the world of music journalism ended with a screw-up so royal it deserved a crown, Kay’s been struggling to re-stack the building blocks of her career. Salvation comes in the form of Sherbrooke Station, the latest alt-rock craze to grace Montreal’s legendary music scene.

A front page feature on the band everyone’s talking about seems like a foolproof shot at success, even after Kay meets their drummer. Matt Pearson might have a smile sexy enough to be the eighth deadly sin and a passion for music so powerful it makes her heart ache, but Kay’s got things under control.

She’s a professional, goddammit, and a professional would not get tongue-tied over a source, even a source who’s a six-foot, tattooed rock god with an affinity for tight jeans.

A professional would not find herself opening her door at an hour long past midnight to pull said source inside and lead him to her bed.

No, that’s not at all what a professional would do.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

Matt’s still propped against the edge of the bar when I reach him. The crowd is thinner over here and I get a good look at him from a few feet away: sandy undercut hair and an angular face, softened by full lips and just the right amount of stubble. He’s got the perfect features to pull off his eyebrow piercing, and while they’re currently covered by a navy blue coat, all my internet stalking has proved he’s got the perfect arms to pull off the collection of tattoos on both.

Eric the Surfer might have been hot in a general sense, but Matt Pearson is one hundred percent my type.

Did I just admit someone in Sherbrooke Station is my type?

“Hey,” I call sharply, hoping I can help myself deny that little revelation by acting annoyed with him. “Giving up that easy?”

He gives me a cautious glance and then shifts his eyes from side to side, like he’s making sure I’m really talking to him.

“On looking for me,” I elaborate. “I’m Kay Fischer.”

Now his dark eyes travel up and down the length of me in a completely unapologetic stare. He smirks when they reach mine again.

Author Bio:

Katia Rose is not much of a Pina Colada person, but she does like getting caught in the rain. She prefers her romance served steamy with a side of smart, and is a sucker for quirky characters. A habit of jetting off to distant countries means she’s rarely in one place for very long, but she calls the frigid northland that is Canada home.

How to screw up a great summer in the Hamptons:

Fall for the one guy with a dark leather jacket, scruff on his face, and intense eyes that doesn’t fit in with the rest of the tony looking crowd.  A guy you can’t have when you’ll be leaving at the end of the season.

Check. Check. Check.

I should add—especially when the guy is your sexy, tattooed God of a boss.

Especially when he not only owns your place of employment but inherited half of the town.

Especially when he’s mean to you.

Or so I thought.

Until one night when he demanded I get in his car so he could drive me home because he didn’t want me walking in the dark.

That was sort of how it all started with Rush.

And then little by little, some of the walls of this hardass man started to come down.

I never expected that the two of us, seemingly opposites from the outside, would grow so close.

I wasn’t supposed to fall for the rebel heir, especially when he made it clear he didn’t want to cross the line with me.

As the temperature turned cooler, the nights became hotter.  My summer became a lot more interesting—and complicated.

All good things must come to an end, right?

Except our ending was one I didn’t see coming.

Excerpt:

He smirked and flipped up his sunglasses.

Bastard.

“You’re early,” I clipped.

“I would have had my assistant text you, but she’s currently bedridden.”

You could have texted me.”

“I didn’t have your number,” he said simply.

“Oh.”

His eyes shifted to look behind me, and I turned to find my friends standing me in a row with my suitcase in front of them, my messenger bag on top, and fake smiles on all their faces, lips together, their judgment about as quiet as a foghorn.

“These your roommates?”

“Yup,” was all I said as I turned and took my suitcase, hugging each of them down the line with promises to text when we landed. And then I turned to Court, rolling my suitcase in front of me like like a riot shield.

I tried to pick it up to carry it over the threshold, but it was heavy, and before I could get far, he’d swept it out of my hands like it was a loaf of bread and not fifty pounds of mascara and shoes.

I waved at my friends, who offered encouraging smiles and hand gestures, and I closed that door, immediately regretting every decision I’d made to bring me to the moment I turned around.

He stood at the door to the backseat, holding it open for me like a gentleman, which I knew he was not. But the look on his face of regret and deference, under the hard shell of his brooding, was almost too much to bear.

So I did the only thing I could.

I ignored him.

I ignored his gorgeous lips as they tilted and the sleek cut of his jaw as I walked past him. I ignored the sight of his long legs as he climbed in next to me and the smell of him that made me want to grab him by the lapels of his jacket and bury my nose in his chest.

The driver took off, and I busied myself in my bag, looking for my headphones and book.

His eyes were on me. I pretended like I didn’t notice.

“You’re not wearing lipstick,” he stated.

Headphones, headphones, headphones. “It’s an international flight, Court. Of course I’m not wearing red lipstick for a ten hour flight.”

A pause. “Rin, I—”

Aha! I popped in my earbuds the second they were in hand.

His lips flattened, his face unamused. Rin, his lips said, but I smiled and shrugged, pointing to my ears.

“Noise canceling,” I said way too loud.

His chest rose and fell with a sigh I couldn’t hear—I’d already turned on music, a playlist we’d built the night before geared toward resisting douchery and unwanted-slash-totally-wanted advances—and he reached into his own bag, a leather affair at his feet, his hand disappearing into the bag and reappearing with a book, which he handed to me.

He watched me with his expression shrouded as I paused, my eyes on the offered book. An image of Penitent Magdalene by Tintoretto filled the cover, and I met his eyes, pulling my earbuds out by the cord.

“I thought you could use this. For your proposal,” he said, giving nothing away. “I…A colleague of mine wrote it, so if you have any questions, I can connect you. If you want.”

I took it from his hand, surprised and disarmed. “Thank you,” was all I said. He opened his mouth as if to speak again, but closed it, and with a nod, he reached back into his bag for his own book. Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake.

I put my earbuds back in place, trying not to bite my lip, but it found its way between my teeth despite the effort at the sight of him sitting there, dressed like that, reading Margaret Atwood. After giving me a thoughtful gift, a book he knew I would want, one I would need for my dissertation.

Court Lyons made about as much sense to me as a scrambled up Rubik’s Cube.

I leaned against the door as I flipped through his gift, doing my best to sort through the rush of questions and confusion as Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s sang about being cheated by the opposite of love. And I found I knew exactly the feeling.

About the Author

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey.

From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

Snow’s Huntsman is Live!

She was trapped in a gilded cage, trying to break free. And she finally did, but what she didn’t know was she wouldn’t get far.

Snow was mine even if she didn’t know it yet.

She’d run. I’d follow.

And once she was mine I wasn’t letting her go. And once Snow White was back I’d show her where she belonged…with me.

Warning: This might be a modern day twist on a classic fairytale, but the heat is extra hot with this one. If you like a safe read with a HEA and possessive hero staking his claim, this one is for you.

I knew she felt my presence before she even turned around and looked at me. It was in the way her body tightened, her back straightening. The wind whipped by and blew her hair over her shoulder and my fingers itched to touch those strands. I stood a few feet behind her, my body strung tight.
What I wanted to do was lift her up and haul her over my shoulder, spank that sweet little ass of hers and tell her she wasn’t ever going to run away again. Despite the fact maybe she didn’t actually run away–that I knew where she was–I needed her by my side always.
“It’s time to come home, Snow.” It took her a few seconds before she finally stood, her back still toward me as she stared out at the ocean. When she did finally turn around and looked at me I had to curl my hands and keep them at my side so I didn’t reach out and pull her in close.
“Says who?” she asked softly, her defiance turning me on.
She was so small compared to me, vulnerable and innocent against my ruthlessness. But I had to be this way in order to make sure she was safe, in order to make sure nothing happened to her.
“I’m tired of being locked away in a gilded cage, Hunter.” Her voice was low, distant. I took a step toward her, inhaling the sweet scent of vanilla that always seemed to surround her. It mixed with the salt in the air, the ocean breeze. “I’m not going to be kept away because my father’s afraid of losing me as well.”
Although I wasn’t surprised that she was tired of the life she led, that her father did have a tight rein on her because of his fears, she needed to know that I wouldn’t let her go on her own. I couldn’t, not for my own sanity and not for the sake of letting her live her life.
I wanted her as mine. I could admit I was obsessed with her, possessive of her. The very thought of seeing her with another man infuriated me. I had waited a long time to make Snow mine, and I wouldn’t deviate from that plan. I’d saved myself for her. She belonged to me and me alone.
I didn’t respond to what she said, just needed her to come with me so her father knew she was safe–so I could keep her that way.
“We can discuss this when we get back to the house and your father knows you’re okay.”
“He knows I’m safe because he knew you’d come after me. And you knew exactly where I’d be.”
I held my hand out to her without responding. She stared at it for long seconds before slipping her much smaller one against my palm. Her skin was warm, her fingers fragile. I curled the digits around hers and pulled her in a little bit closer. Although our bodies didn’t touch I could feel her heat seep into mine.
“He has to understand I’ll leave at some point. I can’t be by his side all the time. I have to live my life.”
I stared into her eyes. “I know.”

reviewpiceofwork3

Piece of Work was a novel full of laughter, finding your own person, as well as diversity. It was full of love and pain, mixed in with sass and attitude, and finding the way to become the person you want to be while staying true to who you are. It was a novel that had so much in it besides just finding love, that my head is full of both Renaissance work and also life lessons. I highlighted so many quotes in this book, not only the sweet ones filled with love, but also the ones that broke my heart. I highlighted the ones I wanted to remember forever.

In romance, it’s often hard to find books that don’t feature the typical white female and white male. I’ve found I mostly read white girls meeting white boys. Nothing wrong with that, it’s just true. To read this novel, and see a six foot Asian girl, who’s smart as hell, and her roommates that are everything in between, and it was awesome! Rin lives with her three roommates, who are all varying degrees of shy and anti-social, but so incredible in their own ways.

Rin is almost done with her PhD when we meet her, and she got an internship at the Met to complete it. We see her in the beginning as an insecure girl, trying to hide herself in clothes that don’t fit. Throughout the novel we see her bloom into a woman confident in her height and her intelligence, with new clothes and a new attitude about how to handle life. Not for Court Lyons, no for herself which makes gives the confidence in her clothes and her abilities as a future curator, that much more strength.

When we meet Court Lyons, he is closed off to relationships, both for friendships and for love. He is focused on her career, and definitely not looking for a woman to match him in both wits and art history. Throughout the novel, we see him make his own self discoveries, including that he is turning out to be the person he most despises: his father. We watch him find a woman that arouses him physically and mentally. He falls for Rin’s brain before her body, and the confidence she finds to not only stand up for herself, but put herself first. This pushes Court to reevaluate his life, to become the best person he can be.

This is going to go down as one of my favorites for 2018! As my first of Staci’s work, I am in absolute love!
