Give In by Layla Frost Review

arcblurbgiveinlaylafrostI watched her.

I knew I shouldn’t. It was a mistake. Wrong. Forbidden.

A glimpse of heaven before a depraved angel led me to hell.

One email was all it would take to end the torture. A simple email, dropping Eden Wilder from my class and my life.
But I couldn’t do it. I was selfish—taking any bit of her I could.

That’s how addictions start. You give in just a little. Just once. Before long, your obsession has grown into a violent storm, shrouding you in darkness as it consumes your thoughts. Consumes your whole damn life. And everything you’ve worked for is gone.

But you honestly don’t give a f*ck. You’d serve your soul up on a silver platter for your addiction.

And she was mine.

Warning: Recommended for readers 18+ due to strong adult language, themes, and a stalkerific hero who puts the FUN in dysfunctional. Enjoy!

aboutheauthorlaylafrostLayla Frost has always been a rebel. A true badass.

Growing up, Layla used to hide under her blanket with a flashlight to read the Sweet Valley High books she pilfered from her older sister. It wasn’t long before she was reading hidden Harlequins during class at school. This snowballed into pulling all-nighters after the promise of “just one more chapter”.

Her love of reading, especially the romance genre, took root early and has grown immeasurably.

In between reading and writing, Layla spends her free time rocking out (at concerts, on the couch, in the car… Anywhere is a stage if you get into it enough), watching TV (the nerdier the better!), and being a foodie. Though she lives in NY (the state, not the city), she’s an avid Red Sox fan.

reviewgivein2

This review was extremely difficult for me to write. Not because it was bad… because it was SO EFFIN GOOD that it literally destroyed me. I stalk- er… follow Layla Frost and am in her readers group, so I saw her little “hey this may not be as safe as you want it to be” and got scared…

For those of you who don’t know, when a romance novel is safe it means no cheating; but it goes beyond that. It means, for all intents and purposes, both parties are eunuchs unless around their partners. I need my books to be safe, for many reasons. Numero Uno is that I hate cheating. Gives me anxiety.

So yeah… I was scared.

A little back story…
Eden Wilder is a college student trying to make a name for herself, and she’s on the run. She keeps a low profile, avoids relationships, and gets good grades. She pays her own way for college, which means she works hella hard… as a stripper.

Get that money girl.

Damien Caine is a professor… specifically Eden’s professor. He’s tough on her work, grading it harder than the others. From the beginning, he’s attracted to her. But he also wants to break her, but only to make her better than she was before. Being so much older than her, he stays away from her for as long as he can… until he stumbles upon her side gig.

There are some parts that may make this unsafe for readers. There’s a slight love triangle thingy in the beginning but Damien basically shuts it down. And Eden does too. But there’s also the fact that Eden has to get practically naked for her customers.

Oh, and there’s the little tidbit that Damien is in to BDSM. Not soft core, but not going to sex clubs either. It’s not a “safe word” situation, but a lifestyle. Part of that lifestyle means being harsh on his girl, but it also means taking care of her. Is ha an alpha-hole? HECK yeah. But is he swoon worthy? My response is not internet appropriate.

If you want evidence that I called Layla out for basically wrecking my whole world, I got it for ya. Message me (I’m funny sometimes). But I’m serious. This book wrecked me. It felt like Damien was breaking me down just as much as he was Eden. I wanted to hate him just as much as I fell in love with him. For every bit of a jerk Damien was, he was a just as much a sweetheart. For every bit the hardworking, independent woman Eden was, she was just as much faltering on her own. As much as she was a mature woman, she was bratty.

This book was full of extremes. Extreme sex, extreme love, and extreme touch. Maybe that’s what got me with it. In every taboo novel there’s a level of trust between the partners that has to be there, but with Eden and Damien they had to earn it. They had to earn every single ounce of trust; every step they made towards love was one hard earned.

It wasn’t just the teacher/student trope, or just BDSM, or just taboo, or just anything. It was everything. The slow burn to end all slow burns. A re-read (AND RE-READ) worthy novel that will have you eating out of the palm of Damien’s hand.

Because when you Give In… you might just find your Happily Ever After.

…Also, Layla, I’m gonna need another book from you STAT. I’m hooked, girl. YOU CAN’T LEAVE ME HANGING LIKE THIS OKAY???

In life, you always learn one important lesson you’ll never forget.

For me, it was to never have hopes and dreams. They could shatter into a million pieces in a matter of seconds.

I’d lived by that one rule my entire life, until the day Harper and her little boy moved in next door. One look into her guarded eyes and a flame of hope was lit. Little did I know; her green eyes held more pain than my heart did.

Breaking through the fortified walls she’d erected around hers would cause me more agony than I’d ever imagined possible.

I didn’t know if two broken and bruised individuals could come together and create something beautiful out of nothing but shattered pieces.

But I needed to find out.

Too Bad So Sad by Lani Lynn Vale Review

arcblurbtoobadsosadTyler Cree has never been good at the whole look and don’t touch thing.

From the moment he was old enough to walk on his own two feet, he’s been looking for trouble.

Trouble comes in many forms…quite a few of those forms being the female persuasion.

Tyler knows what girls want—a bad boy. And he has the bad boy image down pat.

Ex-military—check.

Hot cop—double check.

A bike between his legs and a devil may care attitude—oh, yeah.

All the girls want him, yet none of them will have him—at least not all of him, anyway. A certain appendage they can have all they want. His heart, however, is not up for grabs. The useless organ inside his chest was broken and battered, mutilated by the one woman he thought would keep it safe.

Spoiler alert: she ripped it to shreds and set fire to the pieces.

To protect himself, Tyler keeps everyone at arm’s length, and never lets anyone get too close.

Then Reagan Rose Alvarez barrels into his life, and trespasses on not only his property, but straight into his abused heart. One glance is all it takes, and he’s suddenly thinking about things he hasn’t thought for quite some time—thoughts that a man like him should never have about a woman like her.

One moment of weakness is all it takes, and suddenly he has no other choice but to go on the offensive.

Keeping her is the only other option now.

Turns out, his heart isn’t as broken as he thought it was.

The only problem is, now the little she-devil holds it in the palm of her hands, and she has no clue just how much power she holds.

reviewtoobadsosad2
“Everybody wants sunshine, no one wants pain, but you can’t have a rainbow, without a little rain.”

Since I first heard the above quote when I was in high school, I’ve tried to live by it. I’ve worked hard, some days more than others, to not let my rain get in the way of seeing a rainbow. Tyler Cree and Reagan Alvarez have let their rain cloud and hide their rainbows and sunshine, so they couldn’t see what was right in front of them… love.

Obviously. I basically only read romance LOL.

Anyways, out of all the Lani books I’ve read, this might have been my favorite. Alpha male, strong heroine not willing to let him run all over her, with action, love and pure devotion, with some growly possessiveness on top of it.

Tyler had his heart stomped all over by his ex best friend and ex girlfriend. Since then, he’s ruled his life by keeping everyone, including women, at a distance. Very few people have ever made him want to change that about himself. He’s perfectly fine where he is, thank you very much…

Until Rose Alvarez trespasses on the Chief of Police’s(ehem, Tyler’s) property for some moss she is trying to study. Rose has sheltered herself from the world, choosing to immerse herself in the dirt and mud instead of living life. Her ex boyfriend not only ruined her potential career, but also mentally and emotionally abused her, leaving behind a scarred, unconfident (is that even a word? or am I making things up again…) woman.

She’s not without self-confidence completely. She’s not afraid to stick up for what she believes in. She’s not afraid to push Tyler’s buttons when he needs to get his head out of his butt. She’s just more reserved, more standoffish. Her relationships tend to stay on the surface level, and she’s ok with that… until Tyler Cree pushes her buttons right back, forcing the fiesty woman to come to the fore front.

One of the things I love about romance novels, is that there’s usually (in the really good ones anyway) discovery and growth within the couple and the individual. I’ve often found myself reading about a fantasy world and situations, some more fantasy and sci-fi than others, or reading about murder and mayhem or regency era, and have taken away some life lesson from the novel. Maybe it’s a quote I want to ink into my skin (I DON’T HAVE ENOUGH ROOM FOR THAT) or it’s a person I’ve wanted to carry around in my back pocket when I needed a pick me up. Sometimes it’s making sure I look to these fake relationships to see what I want (and don’t want) in my real life relationship.

Sometimes I read a book and want to scream and throw a tantrum when the girl acts stupid, or kick a guy in the butt when he’s being a butt. But in this book, I wanted to do neither. There was just enough push and pull, with a whole ton of self-discovery, that made this book burrow deep within my heart, and it’s never coming out. The act of forgiveness, of talking your feelings through with someone and not jumping to conclusions, everything about the relationships in this book, both Reagan’s and Tyler’s and other friendships, made me want to evaluate mine again. It made me want to look back and make sure I was doing everything I could to let my friends know I cared.

This book is that good.

Revenge is sweet.

Emma Hastings has tried all her life to fit in. Throwing off her awkward high school years to become a member of a prestigious sorority at Wellbridge University, she has her sisters at her side, and the future spread out before her for the taking. Her senior year of college should be filled with parties, studying, and sweating between the sheets before she goes to medical school.

One night at a party changes everything. Dominoes collapse as quickly as they’re erected. Suddenly, everyone has something to gain and everything to lose.

Love is sweeter.

Jason Gould will never fit in so he doesn’t even try. Content to stay on the periphery of society, he works hard, plans for his future, and keeps to himself. His senior year should be filled with early morning shifts, gym sessions to keep his pent-up anger under control, and readying himself to face the rest of his life alone.

One ray of sunshine refuses to let him fall into darkness. Emma refuses to leave his side no matter what is thrown at them.

When a woman who is dying to fit in joins forces with a man who never will, they just may find they fit together in ways neither could have ever imagined, and they’ll discover a life well-loved is the sweetest revenge of all.

EXCERPT:

The crowd parts as a lone figure stalks out from one of the side rooms. A nondescript gray hoodie covers his face, but from the few gasps of those closest to the action, they know who he is. When he makes it to the center of the ring to stand by Kieran, Rosie and I use each other as leverage to perch on our toes for a better view.

Slowly, almost as if he both dreads and relishes this part, Jason lowers the hood, exposing his face to the crowd. Just as jeers break out, he continues to disrobe until he’s wearing nothing but a pair of faded, ripped jeans.

Silence descends on the basement.

“Oh my God,” Rosie breathes. “I don’t even like dick, but my panties are absolutely drenched right now.”

I can’t get my lungs working enough to respond, but I concur. All his time in the gym has paid off in dividends. Every inch of Jason’s torso is corded with thick muscle. He could give any of the football team, wrestling team, basketball team…hell, any team a run for their money.

reviewgivemeareason1

I tend to say this a lot with books that I love, the ones that break my heart, but I try to be honest when I write a review. That means being 100% honest with how hard it is to write a review, or how much I laughed or cried, or whatever I was feeling (or not) with a book. It means that reading a  rom-com, a dark romance, a novella, a full-length, or a heart wrencher can potentially make me pause and sit at the computer, staring at the screen, waiting for words to come to me. Give Me A Reason did that to me. Even as I am typing now, I’m trying to figure out what to say and how to convey what I want, without giving away the plot.

As much as I’d like to spoil it and gush, I will refrain. (Sometimes I have impulse control! — I actually had to go and look at the other reviews written to make sure I didn’t spoil anything!)

Give Me A Reason will break you into tiny pieces, and just when you think you’ve been stitched back together, it will break you again. This masterpiece touches on themes of death and life, change and staying the same, ignorance is bliss and researching the hell out of something. It deals with topics that are hard to read, let alone write, and I don’t know how Jennifer did that. She literally blew my mind, and if I was allowed to eat ice cream again, I’d be shoveling pint-fulls into my mouth with a shovel.

My heart continues to break for Remy, and for Oliver. The love they shared was ignored for years, as they tried to not mess life up, not rock the boat, and keep each other in their lives in any capacity. But when Remy’s life is threatened, Oliver decides not to waste another minute of their lives. Instead, they try to embrace life for as long as they can. But Remy has a big choice to make and that choice can take her away from Oliver sooner than possible.

Aaaaaand now I’m crying again.

That choice between life and death is one many struggle with in their lives, in different capacities. Remy’s struggle with how to fight something, how to accept something, is something I’ve openly struggled with. Although Remy and I had different paths, and different decisions to make, but there was a conscious effort made, thought put into our decisions. Maybe that’s why this book hit me so hard. The way Jennifer crafted this story truly made you feel what Remy was feeling, every step of the way, every hurtle she faced the reader faced with her. For me, experiencing Remy’s pain felt ten-fold, since it brought me back to the struggle I had.

This was my first Jennifer Miller book, and if she breaks me like this again it’ll probably be my last. I wish I saved a Rom-Com to read, because I absolutely need something to bring me back up. If I could give this book more than five stars, I would. I’d give it ALL the stars. 10 out of 5, 100 out of 5, I don’t care. She deserves them all.
