Until I Saw You…

arc review 1blurbuntilisawyouAt first glance, I knew you were mine.
Your smile captured me and refused to let me go.
I’m too dirty to touch you; too tainted from my past.

You deserve better.

But you’re the one thing I can’t run from.
I thought love wasn’t for me.
I was prepared to walk this world alone.

Until I Saw You.

This book wrecked me! Holy crap it wrecked me. This was my first Jordan Marie novel (shame on me!) and woah I need more. I don’t know what Jordan’s typical writing style is, but I know that this wasn’t Aurora’s, but only in the best ways. This Happily Ever Alpha Crossover is seriously wrecking my expectations for real life, so I’m going to need these authors to chill. This is a crossover into Jordan’s Filthy Florida Alphas series.

This is the story of Jessie Hart, twenty-four year old virgin, entrepreneur and sweet as freaking pie. This is also the story of Allen, an ex-junkie trying to make-up for his sins and trying to fight down the demons that continue to try to take him over. Until I Saw You is a novella that is short, super sweet, but it had the darkest past I’ve read in one of the Happily Ever Alpha novellas so far.

Jessie and Allen meet when Allen’s sister Ana goes shopping at Jessie’s store. Allen takes one look at her and and knows this is his one woman. Jessie feels the pull too, though she doesn’t understand it. She’s dated, but has focused on her store and getting it up and running. Allen tries to stay away from Jessie, because even though he is sober, he doesn’t feel clean. Jessie is so innocent, so sweet, he doesn’t want to dirty her up.

Normally, when a guy or a girl in a romance novel does the “I’m not good enough for her” b.s. I can’t help but roll my eyes want to shake them. But Jordan created such real, vivid characters that I didn’t feel like rolling my eyes. I wanted to hug Allen and tell him everything would be ok. Jessie and Allen were so believable in their vulnerabilities, but also wanting the best for their partner even after short time of knowing each other.

And seriously, when I heard this guy’s name was Allen, I did not know how Jordan was going to make this sound sexy to me. I had two crushes on two separate Allens in sixth and eighth grade, so all I could picture was tall(well compared to me tall), awkward kids that hadn’t come into their own skin yet. But OH BOY I will don’t think I will be thinking of them anymore.

I want to talk about the Mayson sneak peek, but I’m not giving anything away which means I’m not gonna say a THING about it ;).

I’m giving this 4.5 stars, which seems nit-picky, but honestly the only complaint I have, is that I know nothing about Jessie. I just wish there was one paragraph to talk more about where Jessie came from, who her parents were or something. That’s it. My one little thing that made this go from 5 stars to 4.5.

But I loved this book so much!  SUPER job Jordan!

Here I’ll Stay… and cry

blurb

hereillstayI wanted to give up.
I wanted to give into the hurt and not look back.
I wanted to let my demons win and succumb to the pain.
I didn’t want to live because leaving would be easier than dealing with it all.
But leaving wasn’t an option. Not when my best friends held onto me for dear life, and not when my heart had found one more person to beat for.
I was going to fight. I was going to love.
I was Daysie Flores and I was going to find every reason in the world to live—to stay.

I’m not even going to lie, I usually stay away from Young Adult romances for a couple reasons. One, most don’t have steamy scenes in them. Two, if they do have them, I tend to get grossed out cause the characters are, like, 16. Three, I remember being an annoying teenager, thank you Facebook memories, really needed to see the song lyrics I posted 10 years ago, three times in one day, that spoke to my soul, and when I’m reading about 16 year olds, they’re annoying. Nothing against them, but I want to shake them, just like I want to shake my teen brother when he’s being stupid. But, hey, high school is the time to be stupid. Four, reading about people falling in love in high school makes me want to gag.

While there aren’t steamy scenes in Here I’ll Stay, the story of Daysie Flores is beautiful. This was my first Dominique Laura book, and I’m now going to go stalk her to see what else she’s written. This book spoke to my soul on a level other romances don’t often get to me. (Plus the teenagers, besides Jason, weren’t annoying like I was — which I’m pretty sure is not fair.)

Daysie is abused physically, emotionally, and verbally. Her father is an addict, to pain, alcohol, and drugs. Her mother is addicted to work. Neither should have ever been parents. Daysie has known pain almost her entire life. She has made a list of reasons to stay alive. At the top of the list are her two best friends, Maci and Sarah. Brenton Conners slowly makes his way to the top of the list. Although I would have loved to have seen him punch Jason, just once- please, he worked his way to the top of my list too. And he’s 18 so he can be on my “book boyfriends” list. He is sweet, charming, accepting, and honest. He openly communicates his feelings to Daysie and it is so important for her. Between Brent, and her friends, she makes her own family.

I think I was crying as much as Daysie did throughout the book. I’ve never been physically abused, but I have my own toxic people in my life. People that were supposed to be family saying nasty things to me, while I tried to fight my way out of their poison. Luckily, I had a support system that didn’t include those people, but did include family. Daysie didn’t have that. But I know secrecy, not wanting to tell people about what is happening, not being able to tell people about what’s going on, or how you’re feeling, making excuses for people that don’t deserve them. Coming up with reasons to stay alive.

I think one of my favorite things about this book, is something so little I didn’t notice till about halfway through the book. I was reading along, through tears in my eyes, when I noticed the chapters were reasons. Example, Reason One: Ice Cream. Each reason has something to do with the chapter, but usually they were little things. Things like ice Cream, coffee, or running. It caught me off guard in the worst and best way possible. I’m currently going through the chapters again to see what they all said. I’m mad at myself for missing it to start with.

This book was 5 stars, hands down. Thank you, Dominique, for writing this book. For making the characters believable. For making the teenagers not so annoying, while still making their emotions all over the place. Thank you for writing a beautiful piece of work about a topic that is not easy to write about.

Thank you.

Take me out of the Limelight, please.

blurb

limelightcover“Alyson’s writing is gorgeous: passionately poetic; brutally, yet delicately, descriptive; strikingly raw; and insanely sexy. I’m in awe of, and in love with, Limelight…and Alyson.” – Kim Holden, Author of Bright Side

A standalone NSB novel.

I’m unpredictable.
A genius, an underachiever.
I’m the song, the voice, the passion, the pain.
I am failure.
I do music because it’s what I am, but sometimes that’s not enough.

A slave to my nature, I wait for it to show mercy and drop a gift in my lap.
Because the music chose me.
I’m its victim not its gift.

She destroyed my career.
Ruined my life.
Pushed me from the shadows and exposed my lies.
She’s the fire that destroys lesser men,
and now her flames are aimed at me.
She loves to watch me burn,
but the part we never saw coming?

Sometimes it takes a fire to ignite a spark
And slay the darkness.author

I’m a writer, musician, and cat lover. I’m also obsessed with alternative music. Seriously, it’s a real problem.

I write what needs to come out, whether it’s pain, tears, or laughter. I write people and relationships, about the beauty and horror of what we do to ourselves and each other. I write Love. Vengeance. Compassion. Cruelty. Trust. Betrayal. Forgiveness. Darkness, and the incredible way humans destroy and heal each other.

I like to eradicate barriers, refusing to be confined by the laws of physics or limitations of reality. I will befriend a vast population of possibilities and introduce them in ways that might surprise you.

I’m going to preface this by saying this is not my kind of book. I love a good angsty romance, ones with pain and pleasure, ones that make you cry from laughter, ones that make you think you may be a bit twisted because you enjoyed it so much: those are my romances. This book was an emotional upheaval that took every fiber of my being to finish reading. The emotional, physical, and verbal abuse that Jesse Everett suffered that led him down a path of self-destruction to function was too much for me to handle. I had a ball of anxiety in my throat every line that I read.

That being said, this book was so beautifully written. When I started reading, and realized how self-destructive Jesse was, I wanted to cry. I hate drugs, hate reading books with them in it, but I kept reading Jesse’s struggle. I was sucked in to the Jesse whirlpool, cheering Mila for sticking up for herself and for Jesse, cursing Parker because he didn’t understand, crying for Jesse every time he interacted with Jonas.

The songs Jesse wrote, the songs in his head, make my heart ache. I wish I could hear the songs being performed, but I don’t think they’d ever live up to what’s in my head. I do not have a musical bone in my body, but in my head, the emotions in the song? No one could do that justice.

Seriously, the only reason this has four stars and not five are because of totally personal reasons. I didn’t enjoy reading this novel, but I don’t think you’re supposed to. I devoured it, even as I begged myself to stop reading it. I was on an emotional roller coaster with Jesse, and neither one of us could get off. Alyson Santos did an amazing job writing this novel, and this was the first one I’ve written of her, but I don’t think my heart can take any more of her books (at this moment. give me a month I will probably try again).

I am an emotional wreck after reading this, so I will be reading the funniest, most light hearted novel I can find. Something to make me smile. I so need it right now.

EXTREME emotional warning and every trigger warning I could throw out there. If your heart can take this book, read it. I’m not as strong as Jesse, Alyson or any of the characters in the book.

luther2.jpg

Woah. That was my first thought after finishing this book. I had started with Luther, but after finishing I went back and bought King: 13 Little Lies, which is the first in the series. Holy crap this book was awesome, and I need the next book in the series.

This is the story of Ariel McCray, the daughter of evil incarnate Timothy McCray who deals in the skin trade business, and Luther Sutton, right hand to King Adair and the Adair empire. Luther is set to watch the McCray property, which is where he spots Ariel leaving the grounds. From the first flash of red hair, he is obsessed. Ariel is set to commit suicide because of what she’s been forced to do at her father’s hands, but Luther cannot let this happen.

This review isn’t long because the book was short, too short Ms. Donn can you extend this? Thanks! In fact, this book only gets 4 stars because I need more! (Ok just kidding it still gets 5 stars). If you’re not into death and gore, and people getting off on the death of bad people, then you should not read this series. This is for the crowd that enjoys dark romance. So you’ve been warned!

I fell in love with the Adair crew, and I really fell in love with Luther and his sociopathic tendencies. The way Luther is sick and twisted, but calls Ariel princess, following the King theme which I thought was awesome, seriously melted my heart. Not sure who is more twisted, K.L for writing the character or me for claiming him as my new love? Not sure, but it doesn’t matter. This book was amazing! and I can’t wait to read the next one!

These are not standalone. The first doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, but the second book most definitely does. I will be stalking K.L. Donn to see when the next book comes out.

review.jpg

“My bully and I were first introduced in October. I had just turned thirteen the week before.”

I’m not sure I have the right words for this novel. It was intense, romantic, supportive, and so accurately depicted the struggles of living with an internal bully. From the very first line I was captivated and drawn in.

Fighting Weight is the story of Alina Cassidy’s struggle with an eating disorder; specifically with bulimia. This is Alina’s struggle with relationships; romantic, friendship, and familial relationships. This is her struggle with her own body image, and the effects her eating disorder had on her life. This is the story of her fighting for her life. And it was the most beautiful work I have read in a long time.

I’m sitting here struggling to write this review because this is a book that you have to read for yourself. I can’t explain the emotions I had reading this, I can’t tell you how elegantly and accurately Gillian Jones depicts living with an eating disorder and body dysmorphia. I cannot explain to you how wonderful this novel is.

The writing in this novel was so amazing, I almost feel bad for the editor to have to have read this and gone through the emotional roller coaster this novel is more than once. The flow of the novel is perfect. And the dual POV to show how Alina thinks as well as how Slater thinks is captivating.

Gillian beautifully explains the use of therapy, both group and individual, as well as having amazing support systems at home and in life. She is able to show the change in attitudes towards therapy without writing a novel that is thousands of pages long.

It took me a long time to be able to write this review, and honestly I’m still struggling with it. It left me in a book hangover, and had my emotions all over the place. Gillian describes the ugliness of eating disorders as well as the way life is while dealing with one for the rest of your life. The juxtaposition between Alina’s before and after are so clear it really helps to take the novel just one more step. In truth the only way to describe Fighting Weight was inspirationalSince I’ve read this novel, I’ve been searching for what to read next. After reading such a dynamic book, I’m not sure anything can come close to this.

This was my first Gillian Jones book and I cannot wait to find more. If I could give this more than 5 stars, I 100% would. How do you give a novel only 5 stars when an author makes you cry both for the characters in the novel, but also yourself? I’ve never had an eating disorder, but I have my own voice in my head, my own bully, telling me what I can and cannot do or accomplish, telling me how I look, belittling and demeaning everything I do. I never struggled with the binge and purge cycle but the way Gillian weaves the story, by the end, I felt like I had gone through Alina’s journey with her. It was magical.

But then she came into my firm for an interview—a college-intern interview, and everything fucking changed…

Everly (Striking Back #1) by S.M. Shade
25258166.jpgThe first time I met Mason Reed, we were standing naked in a bank, surrounded by guns.
That should have been a warning.
An MMA champion, trainer, and philanthropist, but not a man who gives up easily, Mason is trouble dipped in ink and covered in muscle.
Growing up in foster care, I’m well aware that relationships are temporary, and I do my best to avoid them. After a sheet clenching one night stand, I’m happy to move on, but Mason pursues me relentlessly. Sweet, caring, protective, and at times, a bossy control freak, this persistent man has climbed inside my heart, and I can’t seem to shake him.
After saving me from a life threatening situation, he’s also won something much harder to obtain. My trust. But does he deserve it? Is his true face the one he shows the world? Or is his charitable, loving manner only a thin veneer?
This book contains sexual situations and is intended for ages 18 and older.

This book has a ton of triggers so read cautiously. It is an amazing book and series but deals with dark themes and topics.

Scenes from the Hallway (Knitting in the City #6.5) by Penny Reid
38524539.jpgHAPPY VALENTINES DAY!
From the USA TODAY Bestselling romantic comedy series, ‘Scenes from the Hallway,’ Knitting in the City #6.5.
You know who I am.
I swear too much, I crack too many jokes, and I got a thing for Kat Tanner; a messy thing, a distracting thing, a getting-in-the-way-of-everything thing; a thing that makes being in the same room with the woman torture. Sometimes it’s the good kind. Mostly, it’s not.
What you don’t know is how it all started. You don’t know how we met, you might not know what happened in Vegas (or the morning after), and you definitely don’t know what happened after that.
You want to know the story before the story? Well… here you go.
But be careful what you ask for. As I’ve discovered the hard way, you might not like it.
‘Scenes from the Hallway’ is a companion short prequel/short story (11k words) for ‘Marriage of Inconvenience,’ and includes the first 3 chapters of the soon to be released novel! (‘Marriage of Inconvenience’ releases March 6, 2018.)

But when the man I’m supposed to kill lays a hand on her – the firecracker cocktail waitress with the soft lips and the sweet curves that make my pine tree grow – there’s no way I’m not stepping in.
Beautiful, blonde, tempting as hell. She’s got a body that was made for me to claim, and legs that were born to spread around my bike. Or my waist.
But I’m a man with a mission – a blood vendetta that has to be paid. Mixing it up with Larkin is a bad idea at best. At worst, it might get us killed. But once I feel that sweet little body of hers pressed against mine with my chopper rumbling between her legs, I know there ain’t a chance in hell I’m letting her go.
I’m not here to save her. I’m here to take her – over my bike and across my bed.
Pretty little Larkin is about to get a taste of how a real man claims his woman.
Because up on my mountain, I carry a big axe.
…And I know how to use it.

  5. Come A Little Closer by Kim Karr

He wants to keep me close.
    I should push him away.

Better Than This.

Alex sat on the floor, trying to figure out what to do. On the left, sat a bottle of prescription meds. She could take them now, and end it all. End all the pain, end the suffering, the yelling, the crying. She could end the indifference. Sometimes she was so sad, in so much pain, she couldn’t breathe. Then, she would feel nothing. She knew a joke was supposed to be funny, but she didn’t feel it. She knew a movie was sad, hell she was sad most of the time she knew that feeling, but couldn’t experience it. It was an odd thing, to not feel anything. But then the pain would come back, and breathing became harder and harder to do.

Worse, she had to fake it. Her parents said “No one is happy all the time.” God, she would take being happy sometimes. But she was never happy. Ever. Her friends were worse. “I know exactly what you’re feeling! I’m so depressed too!” or  “What do you have to be sad about?” or her favorite “Just get over it! You’re fine.” Alex wanted to scream at them. Get over it? She wished she could. She wished she could wake up one day and just be fine. She would suddenly know what it felt like to be happy, to laugh at a joke that was funny, to smile because she just felt like smiling. They knew how she felt? What bull. She saw them, smiling for no reason, laughing with everyone. They were sad sometimes, they were not depressed. But “depression” and other neurological disorders had become a thing. Everyone had OCD, depression, anxiety, or bipolar. It was sickening.

People were suffering. Suffering! And nobody cared. Everyone over used the words to diagnose people with mental conditions and chemical imbalances in their brains to describe being sad, or neat, or scared to do something they probably shouldn’t anyway.

Just one more reason for her to swallow the whole bottle in front of her. Her mother told her she’d go to hell if she committed suicide, but almost anything was better than this. She would rather go to hell then go to her piece of crap therapist who nodded his head and prescribed more medicine that made her tired and sluggish. It didn’t make her better. But did he care? No. She hated him. She hated herself more. She couldn’t even tell him the pills weren’t working. She couldn’t tell her mother that her therapist was terrible. God, how she hated this life.

On the right side was a suitcase with clothes in it. Everything she would need was in that suitcase, including $12,000 she had saved up by dropping out of high school and working 50 hours a week for the last year. She never bought anything, she never did anything, so saving was easy. If she took the suitcase, she was leaving and never coming back. All her important documents were in there, she could get a new job, get a new life. She could try, one more time to be happy, to love her self, love the world, love someone else.

It was a long shot, but almost anything was better than this.

“Alex! You better clean up after yourself! I’m tired of picking up your shit!” Her mother yelled from the living room.

Right, she couldn’t leave a mess…

“Don’t worry mom,” she whispered. “You’ll never clean up after me again.”

Alexandra Jane grabbed her suitcase, left the bottle of the pills on the floor, and left the house she had lived in for the last 17 years. She never turned back again.

Just a Few More Pounds

Maria laid on the floor doing her nightly workout.

Fifty crunches, thirty push-ups, fifteen burpees, one hundred jumping jacks, thirty mountain climbers, two sets of twenty second planks.

It was rough but she was dedicated. She had already lost fifteen pounds, she just had to lose thirty more and she would reach her weight goal. She was being very careful, making sure to only drink water in the morning, and only eat celery in for dinner. She told people she was on a cleanse. Most people said she didn’t need to lose the weight, that she was fine.

But she wasn’t. Nowhere close to it.

She didn’t want to be fat anymore, she hated the way she looked. She hated her muffin top, the way her stomach fell over her jeans like she was pregnant, how her chest was sagging, how her arms flapped when she moved them, how her legs jiggled when she walked. She hated everything about herself, but soon she would love herself. Soon.

Just another thirty five pounds to go.

Once she was done, and drenched in sweat, she looked at herself in the full length mirror in her room. She thought she could already see a difference, but she knew she had to keep going. She was already getting compliments on her weight loss. People were telling her that she was glowing, that she looked better than ever, and Maria was very happy about that.

She couldn’t wait until her stomach was concave, her arms were muscular, without being to much like a body builder, until her hip bones jutted out just a little, until her thighs had space in between them. There were many things she was looking forward to, but mostly she was just looking forward to being skinny.

Just another forty pounds to go.

Maria went to the bathroom to take a shower, but first she had to weigh her self to make sure she did not gain weight that day. The scale weighed her at 101 pounds yesterday, and today she was 101. Although she was disappointed she hadn’t lost anything, she was also glad she hadn’t gained any weight either. Her cleanse must be working the way it should.

One day, Maria thought, I’ll be skinny. Forty five more pounds, and I’ll stop.

Before Maria started her rigorous workout and strict “cleanse” she was around a healthy 120 pounds for a young woman somewhere between 5’3 and 5’5. No one could pinpoint her height since she seemed to grow and shrink on a day to day basis. But she was never satisfied with herself. She was always looking at the models in magazines, at the way her stomach looked like she had a beer gut. People always hit her thighs, joking around about the way they would jiggle. Her family would tease her about the way her arms would flap whenever she moved them. “Chicken Wings” they called them. She hated her chicken wings. Everyone asked her to workout with them, and she knew it was because she was fat. Obese. Giant.

As Maria laid in the tub, letting the hot water spray over her, she imagined her life as skinny. Men would say hi to her, maybe even flirt with her. Maybe she’d go get a boob job so she could be skinny and have big, perky boobs. Women would be jealous of her body, of the way she looked. Maybe she would try being a model. Sure she was short, but she could wear high heels and look tall. Of course, she would have to get a face lift to get rid of the wrinkles around her eyes. But hey, plastic surgery could fix the other stuff. For now she just had to lose the weight.

Maria left the tub and went into her room. She could smell the Chinese food her roommate ordered, tempting her, calling out to her, to eat it. No! she told herself sternly. Do you want to be fat again? She shook her head gently, scolding herself. No, she would never be fat again.

She stood in front of her mirror, naked, pulling at the loose skin, at the fat still left on her body.

Fifty pounds to go and she would be happy.
