Deathly: The Dillon Sisters by Brynne Asher Review

I’m a fraud. Or an imposter. I’m certainly a hypocrite.

I offer advice for a living. Encourage my patients to make wise decisions—help them help themselves to walk through life stronger, healthier, happier.

Isn’t that the goal? To live our best lives?

If only I practiced what I preach.

I wasn’t always like this. Every move I make lately is the opposite of smart. These questionable life choices are a new development.

They started the day a certain Vitale barged into my life.

Brand Vitale might look like a hero to the rest of the world, but looks can be deceiving.

I’m driven by obsession for a man who’s turning out to be dark, dangerous, and downright depraved.

And I don’t care.

Because, sometimes, depraved, debauched—hell, or even deathly—is the only option.

Obsession: an idea or thought that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person’s mind.

How deep can an obsession go? How far is too far? What lengths would go to, to protect the one you love? That’s the question you are going to ask yourself as you reads Deathly. There were many times, as I was reading, where I thought I knew what was going on but BOY I had absolutely no idea.

Deathly is the first installment of a duet, where the first one focuses on Dr. Aria Dillon, and Damaged(written by the one and only, Layla Frost) focuses on her sister, Bria Dillon. Their stories are very separate, featuring two damaged sisters running from their past.

And lemme tell ya, if Deathly is any indication, and if I know these two authors (which I do, devoured every book they’ve written) it’s gonna be a doozy.

Deathly starts with a meet-cute. Aria, the psychologist and therapist, goes to a charity event where they’re auctioning off dogs and dates with hot firemen and paramedics. (Enter heavy breathing and inappropriate panting here – also, side note, my husband was a volunteer firefighter for a LONG time and not one of them looked like those calendars, I feel lied to). Aria has ulterior motives in going to the event, and it’s not to get a hot date. It’s actually to avoid a date and a dog all together. She doesn’t have time for either it’s just to get out of her comfort zone, take her own psychological advice she’d give to any patient, and do something different. Something uncomfortable. She wants absolutely nothing to do with the glowering firefighter with the fluffy puppy he cannot control.

She’s also lying to herself.

Enter Brando Vitale, Jr. If anyone could top the sexiest name in all of history (Theo Amato, sorry to my book husband and actual husband) it would be Brando. *takes a sip of wine*. Brando is a broody firefighter, forced to participate in the stupid charity event, with the weight of the world on his shoulders. He has no time for aloof women or untrained puppies. In fact, he’s downright rude to the Doctor. He just wants out. But when the intriguing, dismissive woman who wants nothing to do with a date or a dog ends up spending $15k in a split decision (or potential mental breakdown, either is fine) he forces her out on that date. Not one of owing people anything, he makes sure Aria knows there’s nowhere she can run. As soon as the date is over, they can go their separate ways.

Brand is also a liar. At least they have that in common.

I have to admit that the “I hate everyone but my woman” trope is one of my faves. Brand tops the list for alpha-hole, without being a jerk, but also pushing boundaries of the good doctor. He has a freaking hurricane brewing and should not, under any circumstances, be going on a date with any woman. Aria also has way to much on her plate, with student loans, two jobs, and a full load of patients to worry about. So while Aria tries desperately to get out of her date, Brand is not letting her go. Despite literally everything that could and would go wrong, Brand’s obsession with the intriguing doctor is quick but no less addicting.

Both of these characters have scars that run deep. Scars that carry over from lives they were forced to live. While utterly different in motives, and different sets of morals and values, they begin to realize they have one other thing in common: both have seemingly unhealthy addictions to each other. While Brand is busy giving the middle finger to literally everyone, Aria is trying to move past her own fears and mental issues. I was as obsessed with these two as they were with each other.

Brynne Asher has a magical way of world and word building. She sucks you in from the very first moment. You find yourself biting your nails along with Aria, truly experiencing her anxieties as if their your own, while rooting for Brand to take a wrecking ball to the shields Aria has built to protect herself. It was so easy to get lost in the world Brynne created, full of lies and deception, addiction and obsession, twists and turns.

I can honestly say I had no idea what was coming until it happened. Had no idea how deep their obsessions ran, how far they would go to protect the other. And it was freaking amaze balls. This is one of those books where, once finished, I immediately wished I could read again just to experience it all over. I’m a big fan of rereading, so I can’t wait until I can open it back up to see if there’s any foreshadowing, though I doubt it. It was a wonderfully twisted book, edging the line of darkness without falling too deep, feeding my own unhealthy obsession with Brynne & alpha-holes.

While reading books for the first time, I love to save quotes. It started as a way to help create teasers for my reviews, to try to capture the essence of the book without spoilers and to help tease readers with what’s coming. Overtime, it’s helped me go back and look at couples I’ve fallen in love with, and remember what they say to each other that made me swoon. Usually I save 5 or 6 quotes I can use for teasers, or for personal reasons, but I went back and counted seventeen quotes I highlighted. Each one impactful, important to the story, and ones I want tattooed on my skin forever. Though if I did that for every quote I loved from every book I’ve read I’d end up looking like Travis Barker with boobs.

It was so hard choosing only three quotes from this masterpiece. So hard to choose which ones to help portray what an amazing book this was. It had everything. Mystery, romance, death, mafia associations, police interrogations, and steamy scenes that will have you reaching for your significant other. I cannot wait until I can read Damaged. If it’s anything like Deathly, which I know it will be, I’ll be left with another book hangover.

TL;DR download the friggen book right the heck now.

Bad Situation by Brynne Asher Review!

arcblurbbadsituationA group of women walk into a bar…

Sounds like the start of a crude joke, right? Yeah, well, the joke’s on me because I’m investigating the gorgeous one in the heels with the great ass. Jensen Montgomery.

Now I’m treading that area between right and wrong, good and bad, where sin and honor meld to become gray. Not that I haven’t been here before. Hell, I’ve made my career in the gray. I never hesitate going to battle when my gut tells me I’m right. And right now, my gut—among other things—is speaking loud and clear about Jen Montgomery.

She’s in a bad situation. Not just bad—deep and black and ugly.

And I’m about to make it worse. She just doesn’t know it yet.

Warning: This author is also a mom who runs a PG-13 home. This book is not PG-13. If you are under the age of 18, do NOT pick up this book. This author doesn’t enjoy mama-drama of any sorts. Do her a favor and walk away.

YAS GURL WHAT. ALL THE FINGER SNAPS. ALL. OF. THEM.

Bad Situation was AH-MAZING. 100 PERCENT. Eli Petit, the half alpha-ahole obsessed with Jensen Montgomery’s butt, was the perfect mix between over protective and workaholic that blended seamlessly with Jen’s workaholic life. He didn’t know he needed a fiesty CFO in his life until a dance that shouldn’t have happened and an arrest that should have been laughed at.

As for Jen, she definitely didn’t think she needed a booty obsessed FBI agent that toes the line, just barely, in her life. Between mergers and acquisitions, philanthropy work, running a company, keeping her crazy family in line, and dealing with an a-hole brother-in-law, she is way too busy. She definitely doesn’t need to add a certain FBI agent, that she shouldn’t be involved with since she’s under investigation, onto her to-do list.

Too bad Eli doesn’t care about rules. He bull dozes his way into Jen’s life and into her heart, and dragged me right along with them. Jen doesn’t lie down and take it though (even though I SO would have okkkkkkk), she’s too smart for that. Though her instincts tell her to give in and call him, her head wins out.

Eli doesn’t listen to what his supervisors say, or what Jen says. He helps her despite the fact he shouldn’t. He falls in love with her even though they shouldn’t have even gotten involved with each other. He doesn’t mind being her dirty secret since it means he can touch her butt (he really is an ass man).

One of the reasons he and Jen work so well together is because they both realize how important their work is. Eli is secure enough that he doesn’t care how much money Jen has, and Jen doesn’t care that Eli is an FBI agent. Their work means they spend a lot of time in the office, but it doesn’t affect their relationship.

Which is all the amazingness.

Before I gush all over myself and just give away the plot, I’m gonna stop myself.

I know this was a crossover-ish book between Paths and Athica Lane, but I honestly didnt’ remember Eli from Paths. Everyone remembers the Montgomerys (cause they’re hella awesome) but I didn’t have time to re-read Paths before Bad Situation.

If you’re waiting for it to be announced, you’ll have to wait until they end of the book. However, if you’re like me, you’ll go OH I REMEMBER NOW when it’s too danged late. If you haven’t read either of those books (SHAME) you won’t have to in order to read Situation (THOUGH YOU SHOULD).

So here I am, reading along like a good little ARC reader, trying to figure out what’s going on when Brynne SHOCKS THE BEJESUS OUT OF ME and then goes and ENDS THE FREAKING BOOK while I’m here shaking like a crack addict going through withdrawl waiting for the next book…

Think Eli will arrest me 😉

ANYWAYS. I’m going to go cry a little bit while I wait for Brynne to feed my totally (un)healthy addiction.

My favorite Single Dad Romances!

It’s Father’s Day in the states, so let’s talk about some of my favorite Single Parent reads! They’re my favorite! So here are eight books you can read to get a smile on this day :). These are in no particular order, just however I remembered them! There’s something so swoonworthy about a guy taking care of his kids when his partner takes off, or a guy that steps up in place of a deadbeat.

Until Kayla by CC Monroe
until kaylaPart of the Happily Ever Alpha, Kindle Worlds Until Series crossover, Until Kayla has alpha yumminess, and a single dad that is drool worthy! It’s got the drama you need, plus the sweetness to make you swoon, and a woman who loves a little girl as if it were her own. CC Monroe always writes books that somehow wreck your entire world but also give you insight into something deeper, and this was no exception. Both Kayla and Jase go through something rough, but they come together to make everything better!

Until Leo by Rochelle Paige
untilleoUntil Leo was also part of the Happily Ever Alpha Kindle Worlds, and featured Leo, a single dad and a cop that we met in one of Aurora Rose Reynolds’ books. Not only is it a single dad, but it’s also a man in uniform. Leo and Carrie meet at a daddy-daughter class and it is the cutest thing ever, I’m swooning all over again. I seriously am obsessed with Rochelle Paige (she’s got another series I’ll mention in here because it’s also one of my faves!), but I love Leo so freaking much.

Something So Unscripted by Natasha Madison
somethingsounscripted.jpgWarning: Get your tissues ready with this one. Natasha Madison’s Something So series can have you laughing one minute and crying the next, but THIS BOOK will wreck you so hard. I read it and was crying big fat ugly tears! I thought I reviewed it, but it looks like I never did it, just fangirled over it a lot in my head. That means I’m going to have to do a reread (THE HORROR lol) so I can write a review. But y’all, just so you know how much this wrecked me: Zack is a single dad who’s son has cancer. Denise is an oncologist, one of the best at treating those with cancer. THINK ABOUT IT.

Athica Lane by Brynne Asher
athicalaneBrynne Asher’s Carpino series is SO FUNNY it’s amazing. Athica Lane mixes a crazy Carpino clan, with a single dad who has issues with his ex, and a woman who loves to bake and loves his kids with her whole heart. Cam and Paige have a lot of fun together, and Cam adds a whole new level to *swoon* and crazy families but they also struggle together. Cam and Paige go through some crazy stuff before they can have their HEA. But it’s so worth it!! And it’s FREE on Kindle Unlimited!

Deception by Fiona Davenport
nicandanna1Deception is actually the first in the Mafia Ties series by Fiona Davenport, aka Rochelle Paige and Elle Christensen. It mixes Italian mafia king Nic DeLuca with sweet Anna Martin, who wants nothing more than to be a mom. There are three parts to their story, where these two burn up the sheets and the world with their desire for each other and the love they share. And Nic’s daughter is literally the cutest!!!

Father’s Day isn’t just about the single dads, though. It’s about the dad’s that step up when the sperm donor doesn’t. So here are a few of my favorite single mom books.

Something So Right by Natasha Madison
somethingsoright.jpgI think I’m just obsessed with Natasha… in a not creepy way? Sure. Anyway, this is also from the Something So series. It’s only $0.99 so get it now!! Because you will not regret reading Parker and Cooper fall in love, or watch Cooper step up and be the man Parker’s children need in their lives. It features a woman who is in her mid-thirties, divorced, with two kids with a big age gap, falling for a man who is younger than her, a hockey god, who’s alpha on top of it all. Trust me, you’ll love it.

Caught in the Act by Michelle Minikin
caughtintheactcoverFor a debut novel, this was a hit! It had me cracking up, crying I was laughing so hard, but then also just crying. This book features Liam, a radio talk show host who helps people find out if their partners are cheating on them, and Kensley, who is one of the unfortunate women who caught their partner cheating. This book sent me on a roller coaster in all the best ways, and after I finished I got two bonus chapters for joining a special group on Michelle’s facebook!

On the Rocks by Gillian Jones
ontherocksThis is another book that will wreck your world. Braunwyn has already been through so much in her short life, that all I wanted was to see her happy. And Levi, GOD LEVI, is so absolutely fantastic, stepping up for Braun and her little girl when he was dead set against ever having a girl, let alone being a daddy. But almost from the minute he locks eyes with Braun, he falls for her. Denies it, tries to ignore it, but once he meets Braun’s little girl? All bets are off. He’s done. Blackburn by Brynne Asher Review

blurb

blackburnShe’s my employee.

I’m her boss’s boss. Hell, I own the company.

Pursuing Lillian Burkette was a line I shouldn’t cross.

Until a work trip from hell changed everything.

I didn’t just step over the line. I annihilated the damn thing.

When it comes to her, there’s nothing I wouldn’t do. I’d even kill for her.

When they say the corporate world is a jungle … they have no idea.

What would you do if you ended up stuck in a forest in Nicaragua, with your boss’s boss, who’s usually a complete jerk to you, but who’s also freaking gorgeous? Would you let the circumstances that forced you closer together to make you cross that line? Would you let him kiss you? Would you end up teasing him relentlessly?

If your boss’s boss is Gabriel Blackburn the answer to that is a resounding YES. Brynne Asher brings to life crazy, out of this world circumstances, and mixes them with the humor she continues to deliver in her novels (the Carpinos and Killers series which are both AMAZING, and I’m still waiting for more!) while also giving you a closer look into what makes a jerk, well, a jerk.

And let’s talk about her heroine, Lillian, for a second, hmm? The woman who wipes her nose on her boss’s boss’s shirt, after trekking through the forest with blisters on her feet. She’s the woman who teases her boss relentlessly, but also gets stunned by his kisses. She’s intelligent, crazy so, and not afraid to stand up for herself. She’s thrust into a situation no one would be prepared for, yet takes it as well as anyone could.

From the very first page of this novel, I promise you will be hooked. There is not one page that is boring or will make you want to put it down. This book will have you laughing, crying, and turning the A/C on, all in a few pages. I swear this book was not long enough for me, though Brynne’s novels always leave me wanting more. I promise you will have wanted to trade places with Lillian, despite everything these two go through, because Gabe is that hot– I mean amazing.

While this novel is short and sweet, it is also steamy. These two burn up the sheets, make you reach for that glass, or bottle, of wine, and fan yourself. Sweet doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not naughty. One does not negate the other. Gabe Blackburn loves dirty talk, and lord have mighty is he good at it. Trust me, you’re going to want your lover, boyfriends, girlfriends, whatever, take notes from him. He’s really good at it.

Get your fingers ready to one-click this baby when it comes out. You’re gonna need it. Also, if you’ve read the Killers series, there’s a little glimpse of an old friend in there, who also curses Gabe with something every man dreads. What is that? You’ll just have to read to find out!! (Also- for more teasers go follow Brynne on Facebook!)

Until Avery, Brynne Asher Review

arc review 1blurb

Dreams.

I never had one. Never even knew what a dream was until a certain unassuming Carpino waltzed into my life. That day my world tilted.

It became unhinged.

I might not have been a dreamer, but she was.

She wrote the words missing from my life. Her notes ignited my heart. Her flame lit up my darkness.

Her dreams became mine and I’d move heaven and earth to give them life.

Especially when my past surfaced and threatened to kill every dream we had.
Until Avery, I had nothing.

But I’m Link Forester. I’d fight for her, for us, because right now, I have everything to lose.

Warning: The author will have a dramatic fit—Scarlett O’Hara style—if anyone under the age of eighteen touches this book.

YES! THE CARPINOS ARE BACK! My kryptonite is families like the Carpinos/Maysons. Big, loud, in your face, gossipy families that have your back no matter what. Brynne does an amazing job of mixing these two families together. I’d like an epilogue with the Carpinos and Maysons meeting each other for some fantasy football. That would be a hoot.

If Gus, from Until Nox, was my spirit animal, Avery is me. The good girl who doesn’t break the rules, goes to class, and definitely doesn’t use fake ID’s to get into bars. Link is the guy that owns the bar that Avery is trying to get into.
Illegally.
Avery is going to Vanderbuilt, the college near Nashville, and the Carpinos up Nebraska are not happy about that. They are supportive in the Carpino way, which means guilt trips to come visit soon, and calls to make sure she’s coming home for the holidays. Link just moved back from Vegas, and is happy to be home with his family, the Maysons. He’s not a Mayson by blood, but they like to adopt people they love.

God I love Link and Avery. And Brynne did such an amazing job with this book, it’s 5 stars. No, wait it’s 4 because it’s not long enough. I can make it 5 when Brynne writes more…

ANYWAY, I fell in love with Avery the first rambling page of her trying to use a fake to get into a bar just to hear one song. And I loved Link for bouncing her. I really loved him trying to ignore what he felt for her, but in the end he just didn’t care. Not even when Nico threatened his balls repeatedly. And Nico usually makes good on his promises. Brynne wrote this novella in her style, while managing to capture the essence of Mayson crew and beyond. She didn’t show snippets of the Mayson’s; she threw a freaking party…

…and we all remember the Star Wars Party… (if you don’t know what that means, then shame on you and go read Athica Lane right now!)

Who Doesn’t Love Big Crazy Families?

In anticipation for the Kindle World’s Until crossover series (also known as the “Happily Ever Alpha Kindle World”), based on Aurora Rose Reynolds’ Until Him/Her series, I’ve gone and read some of the authors crossing over. It’s releasing in April 2018 and I am so excited, because I seriously love the whole Mayson crew. (And Until Harmony comes out March 6th, look for my review after it’s released!)

The first author I picked up was Brynne Asher, and the Carpino series, because Byrnne’s novel, Until Avery, will be a crossover with this series. And Ms. Asher, I NEED MORE! It was a short series, only three books, but there were so many people that could have had a story, and the family is just so crazy, that I cannot wait until Avery releases. I need more Carpino’s in my life.

The first novel is Overflow, starring Gabby Carpino and Jude Ortiz.

BeFunky Design

Gabby is an interior decorator, not designer don’t mess it up, with a huge, crazy Italian family. After decorating her friend’s laundry room, the FBI and ATF come barging in, hand cuff her, and pat her down. Jude Ortiz is the FBI agent that pat her down, and then barges his way into her life when she could be in even more danger. Jude, with his police get up, ability to put Gabby in a Jude coma with his kisses, and his bossy-ness, not-so-slowly moves into Gabby’s life and home, protecting her and going out of his mind with worry. Because as much as Gabby likes Jude’s bossy behavior, she still gets her way when she wants to.

This book started out slow. So slow, I was seriously worried if I would be able to finish it. I loved Gabby and Jude almost from the beginning, but because Gabby is an interior decorator, it seemed the first chapter was dedicated to just the laundry room Gabby had designed. Gabby’s eye for detail certainly made her job a profitable one, but the paragraphs dedicated to just how a room looked, were not for me. I bullied through, and I am so glad that I did. Gabby and Jude’s love story is one that I don’t think I will ever be able to get over. It has the perfect amount of struggle and darkness, and tons of comedy to keep it light, and fun.

After giving Overflow 4 stars, I moved onto Beautiful Life.

BeFunky Design4

This story had some more darker themes to it. Leigh, who is Gabby’s best friend since they were 8, has an abusive ex-husband, whom she left because she got pregnant and he beat her. She miscarried. Tony Carpino, who is Gabby’s cousin, who’s always had a thing for Leigh but waited too long, slowly moves in so he can get his chance to be with her. Leigh, who is still struggling with the four years she spent with her husband, and still coming to terms with how to be Leigh again, tries to ignore her feelings for Tony. Gabby was in a Jude Coma, Leigh had Tony Torture. Little touches, gentle caresses, that Tony gave Leigh to show her that he was not Preston, he would never be Preston, and he was going to wait until she was ready. He pushed, just enough for Leigh.

This book was a little darker in it’s nature. Leigh’s life was a hard one, but Brynne makes expertly navigates the emotional trauma Leigh suffered, and Tony’s struggle to be with Leigh, help her move forward with her life and not be stuck living in her mental prison, but also end up happy with her. The one thing that bothered me, that bothers me about all books that have an extreme emotional and physical trauma, is that everyone says their fine and they don’t need to see a therapist. Like going to therapy is a bad thing. Therapy is not bad! And I’d love to see more authors writing a more accepting view of therapy.

But I think that’s more my personal issue than an actual issue with the book. I have never been the victim of physical abuse so I don’t know how it feels to be abused by someone, and I can’t tell if this accurately portrays that. I do know, that it was believable.

My one question: for all that Gabby and her friends complained about Preston being an asshole, and never seeing Leigh, how could they not know that he was being abusive?! It seemed pretty obvious to me.

Still 4 out of 5 stars!

The last of the series is my favorite installment, Athica Lane.

BeFunky Design5

This is the story that, start to finish, kept me smiling and laughing. Paige Carpino meets Cam Montgomery after literally bumping into him at a burger store. After they’re both a mean to each they’re both mean to each other, they go their separate ways thinking they will never see each other again. But, Paige is watching his kids while her sister Sophia is on her anniversary vacation. While Cam would love to never see her again, and vice-versa, Cam’s kids quickly fall in love with her. Cam and Paige struggle with some crazy events, and Cam struggles with his ex-wife Bekki with an i (please read this novel so you can understand that reference), and the damage she did to him when she left him with two kids.

The third installment of the Carpinos includes two crazy families, a lot of psychos, and some more darker themes. This is probably the craziest of the three books when it comes to struggles, but it is also my favorite. I was engaged from beginning to end, constantly waiting for the next part, the next crazy antic that would happen. My favorite part? There’s something that Paige wants that Cam can’t give her, and she sticks with it. She agrees there’s things she has to do, to stay safe; she agrees there’s things she has to do for the kids, and will do everything she can to protect them; but she will not give up her dreams. And she doesn’t force Cam.

I do love a strong heroine.

This book? 5 stars. Hands down.

You’re going to go down in the books as a first class donkey face with a pile of shit on your head.” – Jen Montgomery

Quotes like the one above are what made me laugh out loud, literally. Brynne’s writing is amazing. And she truly brings the Carpino family to life. I cannot wait to continue reading more of Brynne’s work.
