Too Bad So Sad by Lani Lynn Vale Review

arcblurbtoobadsosadTyler Cree has never been good at the whole look and don’t touch thing.

From the moment he was old enough to walk on his own two feet, he’s been looking for trouble.

Trouble comes in many forms…quite a few of those forms being the female persuasion.

Tyler knows what girls want—a bad boy. And he has the bad boy image down pat.

Ex-military—check.

Hot cop—double check.

A bike between his legs and a devil may care attitude—oh, yeah.

All the girls want him, yet none of them will have him—at least not all of him, anyway. A certain appendage they can have all they want. His heart, however, is not up for grabs. The useless organ inside his chest was broken and battered, mutilated by the one woman he thought would keep it safe.

Spoiler alert: she ripped it to shreds and set fire to the pieces.

To protect himself, Tyler keeps everyone at arm’s length, and never lets anyone get too close.

Then Reagan Rose Alvarez barrels into his life, and trespasses on not only his property, but straight into his abused heart. One glance is all it takes, and he’s suddenly thinking about things he hasn’t thought for quite some time—thoughts that a man like him should never have about a woman like her.

One moment of weakness is all it takes, and suddenly he has no other choice but to go on the offensive.

Keeping her is the only other option now.

Turns out, his heart isn’t as broken as he thought it was.

The only problem is, now the little she-devil holds it in the palm of her hands, and she has no clue just how much power she holds.

“Everybody wants sunshine, no one wants pain, but you can’t have a rainbow, without a little rain.”

Since I first heard the above quote when I was in high school, I’ve tried to live by it. I’ve worked hard, some days more than others, to not let my rain get in the way of seeing a rainbow. Tyler Cree and Reagan Alvarez have let their rain cloud and hide their rainbows and sunshine, so they couldn’t see what was right in front of them… love.

Obviously. I basically only read romance LOL.

Anyways, out of all the Lani books I’ve read, this might have been my favorite. Alpha male, strong heroine not willing to let him run all over her, with action, love and pure devotion, with some growly possessiveness on top of it.

Tyler had his heart stomped all over by his ex best friend and ex girlfriend. Since then, he’s ruled his life by keeping everyone, including women, at a distance. Very few people have ever made him want to change that about himself. He’s perfectly fine where he is, thank you very much…

Until Rose Alvarez trespasses on the Chief of Police’s(ehem, Tyler’s) property for some moss she is trying to study. Rose has sheltered herself from the world, choosing to immerse herself in the dirt and mud instead of living life. Her ex boyfriend not only ruined her potential career, but also mentally and emotionally abused her, leaving behind a scarred, unconfident (is that even a word? or am I making things up again…) woman.

She’s not without self-confidence completely. She’s not afraid to stick up for what she believes in. She’s not afraid to push Tyler’s buttons when he needs to get his head out of his butt. She’s just more reserved, more standoffish. Her relationships tend to stay on the surface level, and she’s ok with that… until Tyler Cree pushes her buttons right back, forcing the fiesty woman to come to the fore front.

One of the things I love about romance novels, is that there’s usually (in the really good ones anyway) discovery and growth within the couple and the individual. I’ve often found myself reading about a fantasy world and situations, some more fantasy and sci-fi than others, or reading about murder and mayhem or regency era, and have taken away some life lesson from the novel. Maybe it’s a quote I want to ink into my skin (I DON’T HAVE ENOUGH ROOM FOR THAT) or it’s a person I’ve wanted to carry around in my back pocket when I needed a pick me up. Sometimes it’s making sure I look to these fake relationships to see what I want (and don’t want) in my real life relationship.

Sometimes I read a book and want to scream and throw a tantrum when the girl acts stupid, or kick a guy in the butt when he’s being a butt. But in this book, I wanted to do neither. There was just enough push and pull, with a whole ton of self-discovery, that made this book burrow deep within my heart, and it’s never coming out. The act of forgiveness, of talking your feelings through with someone and not jumping to conclusions, everything about the relationships in this book, both Reagan’s and Tyler’s and other friendships, made me want to evaluate mine again. It made me want to look back and make sure I was doing everything I could to let my friends know I cared.

This book is that good.

The Lakefield series deals with some very serious subjects at times.

Every time I read one of Jennifer’s books, I’m blown away. Truly. Reading the Lakefield series in succession, I saw Jennifer’s way with words go from great to amazing. In Mick I was left broken, with my pieces stitched back together, left hanging by a thread. I connected with Mick on a level I hadn’t with anyone in her other books. Although Brock will always be mine (hah S Van Horne had to give up her boys so I’m claiming him), Mick broke my heart.

We all got snippets of Mick in the last of the Lakefield series, though you don’t have to read those books before this one I HIGHLY SUGGEST IT, but that was before he was broken. We got little bits of the cold man, but that was before his soul was left withered and dried up. There was nothing he could do, nothing anyone could do, to breathe life into his life. There was no light to his darkness, no saint to his sinner.

…Until Alisa stumbles into his lap. From the first, they have a pull towards each other. As much as Mick wants to stay away, he can’t. And he doesn’t want to. Besides the fact, Alisa wouldn’t let him. She may have been sweet, choosing to see the good in everyone, but she got what she wanted too. And what she wanted was Mick.

This was darker, grittier, bloodier than I had been expecting (I’m lying, I totally stalk Jennifer’s updates so I was expecting the darkness), but it was so amazingly well written, you end up rooting for the bad guys. Because this isn’t like Lakefield, where the guys toe the line and sometimes blur it to their advantage. Mick is a bad guy. Alisa sees it, accepts it, loves him despite the demons that hold him back.

Everything about this book felt natural. The progression, the emotion, the bonds that were created. It was the definition of “page-turner”. If you’ve read my other reviews of Jennifer’s books, you know I dubbed her the Queen of Plot Twists… she doesn’t disappoint here either. Every time you think you’ve got something figured out, she twists it up on you, leaving you like one of Pavlov’s dogs, drooling at the sight of a new release.

And if you’re looking for a dark book that can make your glasses fog… look no further. Alisa and Mick burn the sheets in ways that had me reaching for a little paper fan in the middle of the night.

This book has it ALL.

Kocke Chronicles by some Badass Authors Review!

Lawyer. Professor. Policeman. CEO. They rule over the worlds that they work in, but they are about to find out that dominating their professional life is easy compared to controlling their hearts.

Kocke Lawyer, where falling for the boss has its appeal. (BJ Bentley)
Kocke Cop, where catching your dream girl involves catching a bullet. (Paula-Michelle Trotter)
Kocke CEO, where one man’s online dating profile swipes him for a whole lot more than he bargained for. (Dr. Rebecca Sharp)

*These stories are light-hearted, light reading and were written in tribute to the events of #cockygate in an attempt to fight with light.

First of all… check out that author collection!! That’s crazy! BJ Bentley and Rebecca Sharp are just two of my go-to authors when I need a good book. I know they will always deliver. Danica Dawn is a new author, but I’m so looking forward to her work (especially after reading Kocke Professor!). Paula-Michelle Trotter is a new-to-me author… but after reading Kocke Cop, I’m gonna need more. Just sayin’.

So this collection (that really is badass) came together to write an anthology to fight back against #cockygate (and did I hear right? The TM has been dropped?!). Now, I know what you’re thinking… “Cait, another anthology? Is it worth it?” GIRL/GUY/WHATEVER you need this.

Kocke Professor isn’t the usual taboo romance either. It’s steamy, with an alpha male (I mean-they’re all alpha but I’m down with it) that’s been obsessing over his student. His student, Demetria, has been secretly crushing on the professor that bogs her down with homework. However… there’s a twist that made my heart break and made me go “OMG”. It was unexpected, in all the best ways.

Kocke Lawyer was a BJ classic. Funny, sexy, with a little angst to keep that page on your kindle flipping until you’re drooling for more! Kevin and Dani are two forces to be reckoned with, in and out of the bedroom. Together, they make a powerhouse couple that makes you want a full length novel. AND AND AND she adds in some cocky drama ;).

Kocke Cop had a weird beginning, and made you kind of want to punch Kaden in the face. His arrogance beat out even Killian’s. His friends-with-benefits, Candy, is his perfect girl… except he doesn’t do relationships. He’s fine with his single life, and with annoying Candy with her nick name… until something happens that causes both to say their true feelings. Add in some crazy into the mix, and you’ve got yourself a BANGING novella.

Now… Kocke CEO is the last of the bunch… and Rebecca DE-LIV-ERS on her alpha-hole (she really does them oh-so-well). But in true Kocke/badass collection/Rebecca form, the twists in this novella are all over the place. And GUUUUUUURRLLLL when they finally fall into bed together, it’s totally worth it. (Finally– it’s a freaking novella Cait!)

My absolute favorite thing in this novella is that each one of these heroines is smart, capable, and not falling over their feet to impress the guy. They’re not belittling themselves, or weak in any way. They are strong, independent women, falling for men that are cocky and sure of themselves. Even in the short pages of the novella, you can tell these women bring their men to their knees, making them better men.

BASICALLY I LOVED IT AND YOU SHOULD GET IT BYE.

Forbidden Miles by Claire Kingsley Review!

arcblurbforbiddenmiles“Either I was seeing things, or Cooper was stalking down the aisle toward us. In his underwear. Nope, I wasn’t seeing things. It was my nightmare come true.”

Moving back to my family’s winery seemed like a good idea. I can save money, be closer to my family… But I forgot that when you’re the baby of the family—and your three older brothers are basically insane—life can get complicated.

Dating? Forget about it. I’m the forbidden one. There isn’t a bad boy in this town who’s bad enough to go after Brynn Miles. Not with my brothers acting like human chastity belts.

Finding love isn’t my focus anyway. Except… there’s this guy. And he’s kind of amazing. I didn’t see him coming, and it figures I’d fall for the one guy in the world I shouldn’t. He’s T-R-O-U-B-L-E. Untouchable. And just as forbidden as I am.

Am I ready to put my whole family on the line for a fiery case of lust? But what if it isn’t? What if it’s love?

**Each book in the Miles Family series ends with a romantic HEA, but there is an ongoing subplot that spans the entire series. Contains explicit language and content.**

Claire Kinglsey checked every single one of my boxes for a five star review. Alpha male? Check! Safe? No cheating? Check! Instant connection? Check! (Well… sorta…) Drama outside the relationship? Check! Crazy family? SUPER CHECK!

I’ve read one of Claire’s books before, and it made me want to devour every one she’s ever written. Her writing style is amazing. The flow is amazing. She blew me away with Book Boyfriend, but she absolutely AMAZED me with Forbidden Miles.

Brynn is the baby of the Miles family. She’s back home after living at college for the last few years. She’s happy to be back, happy to be near her family again, even if they drive her nuts. She’s funny, mature, and smart enough to have given up her long time crush on her older brother’s best friend.

Well… until Chase sees Brynn for the first time. And not as the forbidden Miles he’s helped the brothers protect and defend. Not as his best friend’s little sister. No, as a woman. And at first he’s all “HELL no I can’t go there” but when he decides she’s worth it? That he needs her in his life? PFFFFT she never stood a chance. Hell, I didn’t stand a chance.

When I say this book had it all, I mean had it all. Chase is a sweet heart, looking for the family he never had. He listens to Brynn and talks to her. He doesn’t treat her like a little kid, he doesn’t ignore her wants and dreams just because of her age. He takes her education as seriously as she does, and he risks his bromance with his best friend to get what he’s always wanted: love.

Brynn is so strong, willing to give up what could be the best thing that’s ever happened to her so Chase doesn’t lose Cooper. Her family is the greatest, but it comes with it’s own issues. But Chase doesn’t downplay her problems because her family is amazing. Each and every interaction they have with each other makes their love grow until nothing could ever get in between them.

Chase and Claire have a bond that couldn’t be destroyed, despite the outside influences that tried to rip them apart. Claire Kingsley brings you a love so sweet, so powerful you want to re read the story over and over again, infusing it with humor and an edge of mystery. Trust me when I say you’re going to want Chase and Brynn in your life. And if you don’t believe me, you’re going to want to read it just to read the epic Chase and Cooper bromance.

Fighting Vegas by Ember-Raine Winters Review

reviewfightingvegas1

This is only my second book from Ember, but she’s quickly becoming one of my go-to authors, especially for MM. I absolutely adored Cliff and Randy’s story. I loved Cliff’s flamboyant attitude, and Randy’s super alpha personality. I loved the representation of homophobia in the world of fighting. I loved everything about this book.

I haven’t read the others in the series, so I don’t know the other characters (but Lordy do I want to now!)  This was my first interaction with the fiesty, flirty Cliff. He was everything I always wanted in a friend: The person to tell you NOT to wear something because YES it makes you look fat, helps you decorate your house, but also is there for you no matter what.

Randy was the guy I would love to lust over: broody, alpha with a past that makes you want to hug him and never let him go. An MMA fighter forced into the closet because his career would suffer if he ever came out of the closet, and in love with a man that doesn’t want to be someone’s dirty little secret. A year before, Randy chose his career over Cliff. But after a year of misery, he sees Cliff again and needs to make a choice: The fear of losing his career forever, or losing Cliff forever.

What will he choose?

This book had it all; heartbreak, love, amazing sex scenes, a crazy ex, and MORE. Oh yes, I said MORE. What I loved about Professor Hot Pants was the inclusion of people’s homophobia and how it affects the relationship and the people. I loved it even more in Fighting Vegas. We love to read romances with everyone accepting the couple, especially for MM because it’s freaking life, people love who they love. But it’s not reality.

The reason this is four stars and not five is because I felt like it moved too fast. This book was jam packed with lots of action, but sometimes it felt like you were just processing something before it was over and something else was happening.

Overall though, amazing book, amazing love, and amazing characters. LOVE.

First of all, can I just say how hard it is to write reviews for cliffhanger books? Cause ugh, this is realllyyyy hard. But also reaalllyyyyy worth it.

If you didn’t think this was going to be 5 stars, you obviously don’t know how obsessed I am with this series, this author, or Luther. Cause seriously, I’m obsessed with them all. I have the cover for Luther as my background on my phone (which can get kinda awkward at my new job but YOLO).

From the moment I read Luther (cause yeah, totes didn’t get the Adair memo at first) I’ve been obsessed. Each book gets a little darker, a little more twisted, a little sexier, and also makes you question your own mental instabilities, let alone KL’s. She brings in so many different aspects to this series, I could probably write a thesis on it (wait- I feel like I’ve said this before…). Anyways, this series is not for the faint of heart. If you’re not into dark and twisted alpha psychos that are obsessed with their women- you won’t like this series. And it’s cool… I won’t hold it against you (for too long). But if you like organized crime families that will go to bat for each other, literally kill for each other, than I welcome you to contact me every time KL makes you go WTF?!?!

Grasping for Air was the stunning, breath taking, HOT conclusion to the Adair series (I’M NOT CRYING YOU ARE). If you’re sitting here, reading this review hoping to get spoilers MOVE ALONG because I’m not giving them. But if you’re looking for a taste of what’s to come, let me tease you as much as I can. There’s a whole bunch of OMG, a lot of fanning your face because Jesus woman you need to go to Church, you’ll be clutching your pearls and a whole bunch of tears. AND THERE’S TWO EPILOGUES. Ugh. That second one though, had me seriously crying.

KL Donn makes me cry a lot.

If you read Carver, you’re probably yelling at me to tell you who this book is about. But I’m not gonna. It broke my heart all over again, and you need to get that too. Each sentence, each page, is another moment you’re going to want to experience for yourself. So get the series, love it, obsess over it, TALK TO ME ABOUT IT PLEASE. You won’t regret it.

I’m going to keep this review pretty short, because it’s a book and a series you have to read for yourself. These are not standalone books, and I don’t want to give anything away.

I read The Theory of Unrequited, and despite the drama, I really enjoyed reading it. I was really looking forward to The Solution. However, I realized this book was not for me. If you like angst, drama, and lots of self-flagulation, you’ll probably enjoy this book way more than I did.

We met Alex and Evan in The Theory. Best friends since forever, they’ve grown up and somewhere along the way, AJ made a mistake. She fell in love with her best friend. Throughout her senior year of high school Evan, being a typical boy and hiding things to protect AJ, messed up. It hurt AJ (and they were big mess-ups, not little ones) leading Alex to only one conclusion: when Evan went to Stanford in the fall, she wouldn’t be following.

She didn’t tell him. She lied to him for months. And then changed his number when he continued to call and she didn’t answer.

The Theory was all about why AJ went to Duke instead of Stanford, and Evan having to learn about his best friend again. The Solution was a lot of unnecessary drama. My biggest problem with the book, and the series, is that a lot of this could have been avoided if Alex just COMMUNICATED with her “best friend” about half the stuff that was wrong. Instead, she lied and cut him out of her life cold turkey.

It didn’t make sense to me.

Now, this book wasn’t for me, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be for you. It was extremely well written, and the plot line is good if you like angsty plots. I, however, do not. Alex and Evan are best friends, and they’re rediscovering themselves and each other slowly (Four books slowly). So start with Theory and see what you think. Len is a very good writer, so I will probably try other books of hers. I’m most likely not continuing this series though.

reviewaccidentally

Normally when I see a title with “Accidentally” in it, I question how “accidental” it is. How do you accidentally fall in love? End up accidentally married? Even if you got drunk in Vegas it wasn’t an accident. It was just the alcohol talking. Name your book “Drunk in Love” or something. However, this blurb intrigued me like no other. So I read it, and I loved it.

Ella lost the love of her life right after she found out they were pregnant after going to get fertility treatments. But it turns out there was a mix-up at the sperm bank, so she didn’t receive some anonymous donor’s, she received Damien’s. Even though she could have moved on with her life, and ignored the phone call that sent her life into another tailspin, but she didn’t. Being the woman she is, she wants to make sure she gives Damien a chance to know his son or daughter. Along the way she finds more than just love.

Damien, who did not donate his sperm, is a member of the Vicious Snakes MC. One look at Ella, and he wants to know everything he can about her. Her body draws him in, but it’s her heart that keeps him. He loses interest in the club girls, in any of the girls, and focuses on his baby mama. (So yes, this novel is safe.)

One of the things I loved about this book is purely Damien. He is 100% invested in Ella from the start. He can be a grade-A jerk to everyone around him, but behind closed doors he shows Ella who he truly is. He’s her protector, her lover, and most of all: her friend. There’s so much drama in this book, and a lot of it centers around Ella, but never once does he doubt her or stray from her.

I gave it four stars instead of 5 because there was a heavy emphasis on the er, position, the club “girls” had in the MC. It was just a little much for me. At first it was ok, but as the story went on it just became too much. However, the story is still really good. So you should definitely be reading this book. It’s free on Kindle Unlimited!

Broken Love Story by Natasha Madison Review!

arcblurb956c1-35239470_1064540333711769_7107813220068360192_nSamantha:

I had the perfect life; a husband who loved me, and two kids who were my world.
Until someone else answered his phone and my perfect life shattered.
When he died, I was left with answers he couldn’t give me and a box full of lies.
He left me broken.

Blake:
I fell in love when I was fifteen, knowing she was the one.
For five years, she was my everything—my every breath, every heartbeat, every thought.
She made me promise to move on, promise to find love again, but I broke those promises because I can’t move on.

Two broken souls brought together by tragedy and heartbreak.
Can a broken love story be fixed?

When her nose isn’t buried in a book, or her fingers flying across a keyboard writing, she’s in the kitchen creating gourmet meals. You can find her, in four inch heels no less, in the car chauffeuring kids, or possibly with her husband scheduling his business trips. It’s a good thing her characters do what she says, because even her Labrador doesn’t listen to her…

Holy crap I wasn’t ready. After reading Perfect Love Story and Unexpected Love Story, I hoped and prayed Broken was about Samantha and Blake. AND HELLO IT WAS. After all my finger crossing and rain dancing in hopes it was this story, I thought I was prepared for their love story.

I.
WAS.
NOT.
READY.

In her way, Natasha Madison seamlessly blended three love stories happening in concert, while simultaneously creating three unique and individual romances that will leave you wanting more. Each piece of the story you read adds a new layer to the lies that one man told effectively ripping apart the lives around him.

If you hated Eric in Perfect, trust me, it gets worse. One minute, Samantha was taking care of her kids while wondering where her husband was, and the next she got a call that her husband was dead. Not only that, he had another wife. Her life as she knew it was over but just when Samantha’s perfect life crashes down around her, she finds a friend in the most unlikely place: Blake. Her dead husband’s second wife’s older brother. Yeah, say that three times fast.

Blake is a compassionate man, who suffered his own loss when he was young. Because of that, he’s broken in his own way. He’s picked up the pieces as best as possible, but it’s not really until he meets Samantha that he realizes what he’s missing. What starts out as extending a helping hand to someone struggling, becomes more. So much more.

To sum it up: ALL THE FEELS. This book had everything! Healing, love, romance, friendship, and (my personal fave) a single mom. Blake steps up in ways that Eric never did. He shows not only Samantha, but also her girls, what love is like. He shows them what a family is supposed to be. This is probably my favorite of the series (though Gabe is still mine!) because of all the stuff we didn’t see in the previous books. Samantha went from a girl I disliked immensely, to a girl I felt bad for, to a woman I want to be when I grow up. Her strength in living life after a tragedy, in trying to mend her broken pieces, in everything was so amazing I admire her.

Basically, you NEED this book. And this series.

Ain’t Doin’ It by Lani Lynn Vale Review

arcblurbaintdoinitCoke Solomon has lived a full life.

He’s a retired army drill sergeant, so he is more than used to getting his way.

And if he can’t have it his way? Well, let’s just say that’s never happened before…

At least not until Cora Maldonado walks into his life, demanding he fall in line, or she’ll find a way to make his life hell.

He finds out fast that Cora marches to the beat of her own drum, and a lot of times that drum takes her farther away rather than closer to where he feels she needs to be.

He can’t stand it.

He wants her, and he has to have her.

It doesn’t matter that she’s twenty years younger than him, and has a father that would rather see him dead than have his baby girl anywhere near him. Nor does it matter that his ex-wife is highly offended that she’s been replaced with a much younger woman.

Despite the odds stacking against them, he’ll fight for what he wants.

His ex-wife, her father, and their age difference be damned.

Single, sort-of alpha a-hole dad meets quirky, virgin animator that’s usually seen as just strange. Add in a ten year age gap, a crazy ex-wife, a failed kidnapping, and someone’s aversion to relationships, and you have the recipe for disaster… or happily ever after.

Ain’t Doin’ It was a sweet story with Cora’s weirdness drawing you in as easily as she draws her characters. Although Coke is a single dad, his daughter is closer to Cora’s age (she’s in her early twenties, Coke’s daughter is 17), allowing them to bond more like friends than mother/daughter. Cora is compassionate, loving, and a little more reserved due to her upbringing. She doesn’t express herself well in person, so she pours herself and her feelings into her artwork. But she ain’t weak that’s for sure. Coke’s desire to stay single is because of a crazy ex-wife, who’s seriously off her rocker. It doesn’t happen all at once, but through Coke’s resolve, Cora worms her way into his heart little by little (like we all knew she would, I mean seriously.)

Why is this book 4 stars and not 5? For a couple reasons. One, the blurb is seriously misleading. The age gap is not that big. I believe it’s only ten years. Am I being picky because of this? Maybe, but blurbs lead you to read the book and this one doesn’t accurately depict the novel. Two, this book was mostly fluff. Sure, there was drama, but it moved past everything so quickly you didn’t really have time to comprehend what was happening. There was just a lot of sex. The oomph I wanted just seemed to be missing.

Despite these, this book deserves every star I gave it. It’s well written, and cute. There’s also the mental illness factor. I’ve only read 2 Lani novels (I know! Shame!) and both have had, what seems to me, like well researched problems. They weren’t thrown out there for the hell of it, but added another dynamic to the characters. There comes a sort of normalization with adding this layer. They characters aren’t crazy, and aren’t made out to be crazy, and they don’t make excuses for themselves, but have identified their problems and learn to lead well rounded lives with them. And their significant others try to understand them as best as possible, even though it takes experiencing it to truly understand it. It helps create not-so-perfect characters living with things that are common, yet taboo to talk about.

Overall, this will not be my last Lani book.
